Clean Energy Provides LNG Supply to Santa Monica’s Big Blue Bus

The City of Santa Monica has awarded its LNG fuel supply contract to Clean Energy for 100% of LNG needs for its Big Blue Bus transit system for up to four years. Clean Energy will deliver approximately 180,000 gallons of LNG per month, fueling 99 LNG buses and displacing over two million gallons of petroleum annually.

Big Blue Bus serves a population of 458,000 persons in the Santa Monica area covering 51 square miles. There are more than 21 million passenger trips annually.

The transit system received the prestigious National NGV Achievement Award in October 2006 given by NGVAmerica and the Clean Vehicle Education Foundation for recognizing the environmental effects of diesel emissions and actively addressing health and air quality concerns by implementing LNG into its transit operation.

The City of Santa Monica has been a long-time advocate for natural gas vehicles with a CNG station that has fueled natural gas refuse trucks and street sweepers since 1995. The Big Blue Bus has capitalized on the air quality, energy security, economic, safety and public policy benefits of running a fleet of LNG transit buses.
